About This Memorial

The Buffalo Soldier Memorial at F.E. Warren Air Force Base commemorates the African-American cavalry regiments 9th and 10th Cavalry and infantry units like the 24th Infantry who served at Fort Russell in the early 1900s. The memorial features a striking statue of a buffalo soldier holding a rifle, symbolizing their vigilance and honorable service during the Western frontier era. These soldiers earned their nickname from Native Americans who respected their bravery and likened their appearance to buffaloes. The memorial honors their role in peacekeeping missions and shaping the American West, bridging the gap between the Civil War's 54th Massachusetts and WWII's Tuskegee Airmen in African-American military history.

"Small, but very nice, memorial to the Buffalo Soldiers who helped build the local area. Also, historical plaques outlining the military history of Cheyenne from 1867 to the present are on site. Street parking only, but it’s in a quiet neighborhood down the street from F.E. Warren."
