About This Memorial

The Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial commemorates the sacrifices made during the US Secret War in Laos during the Vietnam War era. It features 24 black granite panels, with 12 dedicated to name engravings and 12 for narrative texts. A central mosaic design of Hmong needlework Paj Ntaub symbolizes the contributions of Hmong women to the war effort. The memorial honors SGU veterans and civilian officers who participated in the conflict, both living and deceased. It serves as a humble reminder of this lesser-known chapter of wartime collaboration.

"One of the more beautiful and educational memorials that I have ever seen, not only a list of names, but a long inscription about the secret war in Laos and how it affected the Laotian people. We even met one of the Hmong citizens whose name is on the monument, Xai Pao Lee, who was sweeping the area and took time to share some stories and information with us. The outer sides of the marble host beautiful mosaic plaques with sketches of Laotian scenes from the war as well as culture. The only thing that is not top notch, is that some of the printing is only carved and difficult to read. Some is in white and easy to read. Worth a visit. Reminds us of how often and badly our government sadly abandoned people who were our allies too."
