About This Memorial
The Point Pleasant Battle Monument commemorates the 1774 Battle of Point Pleasant, a pivotal conflict between Virginia colonial troops and a coalition of Native American nations led by Shawnee Chief Cornstalk. The granite and bronze monument features a frontiersman statue and historical plaques, erected through state and federal funding between 1901-1908. It marks what some consider the first battle of the American Revolutionary War, though primarily it memorializes the clash between expanding colonial forces and indigenous resistance. The site, named Tu-endie-wie 'Meeting of the two rivers', was developed as a memorial park with contributions from the Daughters of the American Revolution and government appropriations.
