About This Memorial

The Nicholas H. Null Memorial in Parkersburg, West Virginia honors Navy SEAL Nicholas Null and 30 other American soldiers killed when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan on August 6, 2011 during Operation Enduring Freedom. Dedicated in 2013, the memorial features a central monument with Null's picture, a statue of military boots with a rifle and helmet, and a stone plaque listing all victims' names. Three additional stone monuments display military insignias and local service members' names lost since 9/11, with the inscription 'Some Gave All.' The memorial commemorates the deadliest single loss of American life in the Afghanistan War at that time, particularly highlighting Null's service as a Parkersburg native and decorated Navy SEAL.
