About This Memorial

The Veterans Memorial Park in Smithville, Texas, was conceived as a tribute to Bastrop County veterans from all wars, particularly honoring the community's disproportionate loss of soldiers in recent conflicts. Developed through a partnership between Mark Bunte and Patti Patton Bader of Soldier's Angels, the park serves as both a memorial and a place for peaceful reflection. Its notable features include historical plaques, a splash pad for children, a detailed angel and cherub sculpture by Bill McGlaun, and personalized bricks honoring individual veterans. The park commemorates local fallen heroes who fought for freedom, with special emphasis on those from recent conflicts. It was dedicated on Memorial Day 2013 after two years of community fundraising and volunteer efforts.

"Loved that we could still play with the water in October. Small park which is great for keeping an eye on the little ones."
