About This Memorial

Dead Man's Hole in Burnet County, Texas, serves as an unofficial Civil War memorial due to its grim history as a dumping site for Union sympathizers' bodies during the conflict. The limestone sinkhole, originally called Burnam's hole, gained notoriety when remains were recovered in the 1860s. Though not a traditional memorial, its 155-foot depth and historical marker erected 1998 commemorate the victims of wartime violence. The site, now a county park, primarily memorializes casualties of local Civil War tensions rather than battlefield deaths. Its natural geological formation became an accidental war memorial through its tragic association with the conflict.

"TEXAS HISTORY CAN BE BRUTRAL. A visit out to this 155-foot deep vertical cave is interesting and disturbing. This was the dumping ground for numerous murder victims. It should be approached with awe and reverence. The entrance is sealed, but I advise caution from letting small children or pets from getting too close to the vent opening."
