About This Memorial
The USS SCORPION SS-278 Memorial in Yankton, South Dakota, commemorates the submarine lost during World War II. Located in Riverside Park overlooking the Missouri River, it was dedicated on 6 October 2002 by the South Dakota Chapter of the US Submarine Veterans of WWII. The memorial honors the 60 crewmembers who perished when the SCORPION, believed sunk by enemy mines, disappeared in January 1944 during its fourth war patrol in the East China and Yellow Seas. The site features a simple yet poignant design, marked by a dedication plaque and photographs documenting the submarine's history. This memorial serves as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of submariners in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
