About This Memorial

The Great Swamp Fight memorial commemorates the decisive 1675 battle in King Philip's War, where colonial forces from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Plymouth crushed the Narragansett Indians. Erected in 1906 by the Rhode Island Society of Colonial Wars, the monument features a 20-foot obelisk surrounded by four boulders engraved with colony names. It marks the site of the Narragansetts' last stand and originally included a second plaque honoring Major Samuel Appleton, which is now missing. The memorial serves as a physical reminder of this pivotal conflict between colonists and Native Americans in New England.

"Very interesting history from King Philip’s war. The monument is interesting too. The exact site of the battle is lost to history, but this monument is in the general area. The “road” back to the monument is ok, but if there has been a lot of rain it would be easy for a car to get stuck, so be careful. There is a house very close to the entrance, so drive slowly. Read Benjamin Church’s description of the battle."
