About This Memorial

Nine Men's Misery is the oldest war veterans memorial in the United States, located on the grounds of the former Cistercian monastery in Cumberland, Rhode Island. It commemorates nine colonial soldiers who were tortured and killed during King Philip's War in 1676. The memorial consists of a simple stone cairn marking the site where the soldiers' remains were buried. This somber landmark serves as an early testament to the sacrifices made during colonial conflicts in New England.

"Most definitely worth the hunt in the woods for this. Beautiful place to listen to nothing but the sounds of nature and to reflect on this monument. It is not far off the main trail, just keep looking and you will find it on top of a small gentle hill. When woods are thick, it will be trickier. Trails surrounding it are easy trails and plenty of space to bring Fido along too! Park in the lot next to the Cumberland senior center."
