About This Memorial

The Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial, dedicated in 1987, commemorates Oregon residents who died or are missing in action during the Vietnam War. Inspired by the national memorial in Washington, D.C., it features a curved black granite wall listing names and chronicling key events of the conflict. Designed by Walker Macy, the memorial includes symbolic elements like pear trees representing life and water features signifying hope in its Garden of Solace. Located in Washington Park's arboretum, it provides a serene space for reflection on the sacrifices of Oregon's Vietnam veterans.

"I love the memorial. The brief descriptions of each year suck me always in and I end up wondering about those young soldiers who had no chance to grow old. The spot is beautifully architected."

About This Memorial

The Battleship Oregon Memorial in Waterfront Park honors the USS Oregon, a naval ship nicknamed 'the Bulldog of the United States Navy' that served from 1893 through multiple battles before retirement. A time capsule was placed in its base on July 4, 1976, to be opened in 2076. The memorial commemorates the ship's service in the Spanish-American War and other conflicts. Its design features a commemorative plaque with historical details about the ship's legacy. The Police Memorial at SW Jefferson near the Hawthorne Bridge honors Portland police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Dedicated in 1993, it serves as a solemn tribute to their service and sacrifice. It commemorates the risks faced by law enforcement in protecting the community. The memorial's design emphasizes reverence and remembrance for fallen officers.
