About This Memorial

The William McKinley National Memorial in Canton honors the 25th U.S. president, who served as a Civil War veteran before his presidency. The neoclassical monument features a 50-foot dome sheltering sarcophagi for McKinley and his wife Ida, constructed with granite and marble from multiple states. It commemorates McKinley's legacy as both a Civil War participant and the president bridging 19th and 20th century America. The adjacent museum displays artifacts from his military service and presidency, including personal items that humanize his story. While primarily a presidential memorial, it also serves as a tribute to his Civil War service.

"A statement on the pride that the people of Canton hold in President McKinley. Certainly not every former president is honored in this way. It is a beautiful, reverent monument. I just happened to visit on 9/11 as well. There was some kind of event there honoring first responders there as well. Parking is free and so is access to the monument, however there is a charge for the museum."
