About This Memorial
The Lejeune Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville, NC honors military service members who sacrificed for freedom, featuring memorials for the Beirut bombing victims 1983, Vietnam War veterans, Montford Point Marines 1942-1949, and a 9/11 World Trade Center beam. Its centerpiece is the Beirut Memorial, the largest privately funded military memorial, inscribed with 'They Came In Peace' and names of 273 fallen Marines. The site also includes a Vietnam Veterans Memorial listing all names of the fallen, second only to Washington DC's in size, and a Montford Point Marine Memorial with 20,000 stars representing segregated Black Marines. Future plans include a Corpsmen Memorial and Museum of the Marine.

"Stopped in to get some jogging in during a long day of travel. Several quite paved trails perfect for jogging. In addition to the military memorials, there is also a piece of steel from the twin towers here and a small memorial to the heros of 9/11"
