About This Memorial
The New Hampshire Marine Memorial at Hampton Beach commemorates all New Hampshire servicepersons lost at sea due to warfare, originally focusing on World War II but later expanded to include subsequent conflicts. The memorial features a 12-foot granite statue of a woman holding a wreath, gazing toward the water, with the inscription 'BREATHE SOFT, YE WINDS, YE WAVES IN SILENCE REST' from a 1714 poem. It began as a grave marker request for Captain William D Downs, buried at sea in 1945, and evolved into a broader tribute through community and governmental efforts. Names of the fallen are inscribed on the memorial, with the most recent addition in 2022 honoring Marine Cpl. Jonathan Currier. The memorial, dedicated in 1957, stands as a poignant tribute to maritime service and sacrifice.

"Beautiful memorial near the beach, honoring men and women lost during WWII. Very peaceful place to sit and think about our military for a little while."
