About This Memorial

The Veterans Memorial Garden in Lincoln, Nebraska, was established in the 1990s following community efforts to honor veterans of all eras, sparked by the 1989 display of the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall in Antelope Park. The garden features over 20 military monuments, including tributes to the Airborne, Doolittle Raiders, Tuskegee Airmen, and World War I and II veterans, centered around a striking arch and brick pathways with personalized 'Bricks of Honor.' It serves as a solemn space for reflection and commemorates sacrifices made by service members across multiple conflicts, from pre-1900 engagements to post-9/11 operations. Annual events like Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies reinforce its role as a living memorial.

About This Memorial

The 'War and Victory' monument in Lincoln's Antelope Park is a distinctive 30-foot tall memorial created by sculptor Ellis Luis Burman during the Great Depression as a WPA project. Unlike traditional triumphant war monuments, it features a contemplative figure of Victory leaning exhausted on his sword, symbolizing the heavy toll of conflict. The base displays four soldiers representing major U.S. wars up to that point: the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I. Made from crushed marble, this was the largest WPA sculptural commission at the time, blending artistic innovation with historical commemoration.
