"My husband and I rode our motorcycle through here. It's cleaned up nicely with no trash on the roads. We really enjoyed it. We were sad about the road work and not being able to get to other areas of the park. We plan to bring our kids another time."

About This Memorial

The USS Cairo Gunboat memorial commemorates a Civil War-era ironclad warship that served in the Union Navy's Mississippi River fleet. This City Class river ironclad, commissioned in 1862, participated in battles at Plum Point and Memphis before being sunk by Confederate torpedoes mines in the Yazoo River near Vicksburg in December 1862. The memorial features the salvaged and partially restored ironclad under a protective shelter, along with a museum displaying artifacts recovered from the wreck. It honors both the technological innovation of Civil War ironclads and the sailors who served aboard them during the Vicksburg Campaign. The site preserves one of the few surviving examples of these revolutionary warships that helped the Union control vital Southern waterways.

"This exhibit is very impressive. I was surprise by the size of the gunboat. The preservation and restoration is amazing. You can actually walk through a portion of the gunboat. The onsite museum has 100's of artifacts, information and a video about the recovery. $20 was the admission price for all of that on the day we visited. You can purchase your ticket online."
