About This Memorial
The 23rd Regiment Boulder is a Civil War memorial located at the head of Winter Street near Salem Common. This 58-ton granite boulder, transported from Salem Neck in 1905, commemorates the 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. It features a bronze tablet listing the regiment's thirteen engagements and includes historic cannons from the old Cadet Armory. The memorial honors Salem's significant Civil War contributions, including over 3,000 enlistments and 155 local casualties. It stands as a tribute to those who served, were wounded, or perished in the conflict.
