About This Memorial

The Major Charles J. Loring Memorial Park, completed in 2000, honors Portland-born Major Charles J. Loring Jr., a decorated fighter pilot who served in World War II and the Korean War. Designed by artist Ann Uppington and landscaped by Richardson and Associates, the memorial features dramatic elements including four granite sentinel posts inscribed with the words SPIRIT, INTEGRITY, PRESENCE, and HEART, and a central light well symbolizing Loring's aviation service. The park commemorates both his military heroism and his belief in everyday bravery, set within a 300-foot arc of native landscaping on Portland's Eastern Promenade.
