About This Memorial

The Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial, constructed in 1988 in Frankfort, honors 1,109 Kentucky veterans who served and died during the Vietnam War. Its notable design features a blue-gray granite sundial where each fallen soldier's name is engraved so the shadow touches it on their death anniversary, creating a personal tribute. The memorial uniquely positions POW/MIA names behind the sundial's gnomon, ensuring their names remain untouched by shadows. It stands as one of the nation's largest granite memorials, overlooking the state Capitol. The site welcomes visitors to learn about Kentucky's Vietnam War sacrifices and offers educational group visits.

"Magnificently thought out memorial for the Kentucky veterans of the Vietnam War. This sun dial is spectacular in the way it individually memorializes each person throughout the day as the gnomon (pointer) shadow points to the person and time of each fallen soldier’s passing. Pick a nice sunny day to really appreciate this wonderful memorial, but if it’s overcast don’t miss it either. The area is well maintained and peaceful….as it should be. Parking is adequate"
