About This Memorial

The Freedom Rock is a 60-ton boulder in rural Iowa, painted annually since 1999 by artist Ray 'Bubba' Sorensen II to honor U.S. veterans. Inspired by the film 'Saving Private Ryan' and Memorial Day, it features changing murals thanking veterans for their service. The project expanded to include a Freedom Rock in each of Iowa's 99 counties, with a national tour now underway. It commemorates veterans of all U.S. wars through vibrant artwork on natural stone.

"Well done. I've seen many memorials, but this one is one of the best in how it was designed --obviously, the individuals responsible have first hand experience to convey in the symbolism and environment of this site. Sit on the path to the stone and take in it's presence juxtaposed to the picture perfect farm scenery to the east. What our soldiers defend/what it costs. Thank you and again, well done."
