About This Memorial
The Kinsman Monument is a Civil War memorial erected in 1902 to honor Colonel William Kinsman, commander of the 23rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and other Civil War veterans. Located in Fairview Cemetery, it commemorates Kinsman's sacrifice during the Battle of Big Black River Bridge where he was mortally wounded. The monument features four Civil War cannons surrounding its base. Originally buried on the battlefield, Kinsman's remains were later returned to Council Bluffs through efforts led by General Grenville M. Dodge and fellow veterans. This memorial serves as a tribute to local soldiers who fought in the American Civil War.

"Pretty impressive views from at top of here looking over the area. Great place to get away for awhile and to think and reflect or take a sack lunch and enjoy nature."
"The entrance is marked as a private drive, so we did not enter due to fear of trust passing"
