About This Memorial

The Victory Monument commemorates the Eighth Regiment of the Illinois National Guard, an African-American unit that served in France during World War I as part of the 370th U.S. Infantry. Erected in 1926 with a bronze soldier added in 1936, it features designs by Leonard Crunelle, a pupil of sculptor Lorado Taft. The monument includes bronze panels and stands at 35th Street and King Drive in Chicago. It was dedicated on Armistice Day in 1928 and remains a site for annual Memorial Day ceremonies. The memorial is part of the Black Metropolis-Bronzeville Historic District.
