About This Memorial
The Hawaii County Vietnam Memorial in Hilo honors veterans of the Vietnam and Korean Wars, located at Veterans Memorial Park on Hilo Bay. Its centerpiece is a white plinth with black marble panels engraved with names of fallen Hawai'i County soldiers from Vietnam, topped by an eternal flame symbolizing enduring gratitude. A nearby obelisk commemorates Korean War casualties, while a separate pillar tells the tragic story of the 1942 sinking of the US Army transport ship Royal T. Frank by a Japanese submarine, which claimed 17 Hawaiian soldiers' lives. The memorial complex collectively honors multiple conflicts affecting Hawaiian servicemen.
