"Texas Capitol is open daily. They take tours every 30 minutes. It’s free. The grounds are kept clean and secure with MPs. Oh, and the squirrels are human friendly also lol they come to you for food. A lot of schools tour in the week so small children around everywhere. Maybe better for older kids/teens to appreciate the character and history. Most of the rooms inside are closed off to the public, maybe due to construction. Some rooms have specified hours only. Overall great time at the Capitol and surrounding historic buildings."

"We saw the flags flying when we climbed Mt Baldy but when we went to try and find the memorial, there was one sign from the road and that was it. The city needs to put better signage and an improved road to get to the memorial. Once we finally figured out that the memorial was behind the theatre and up on a ridge, we were able to find it. It was once a very nice memorial with quite a few Eagle projects that are a tribute to the veterans but it needs a bit of sprucing up. Seems like it is a bit forgotten but hiding in this town like it is, I can understand why that is."

About This Memorial

Dead Man's Hole in Burnet County, Texas, serves as an unofficial Civil War memorial due to its grim history as a dumping site for Union sympathizers' bodies during the conflict. The limestone sinkhole, originally called Burnam's hole, gained notoriety when remains were recovered in the 1860s. Though not a traditional memorial, its 155-foot depth and historical marker erected 1998 commemorate the victims of wartime violence. The site, now a county park, primarily memorializes casualties of local Civil War tensions rather than battlefield deaths. Its natural geological formation became an accidental war memorial through its tragic association with the conflict.
